Elections will be held May 8 at the annual meeting of members during the Council's 57th annual conference in Pittsburgh (http://int2.cof.org/conferences/ac2006).

ENCOURAGING PROGRESS: The Council on Foundations announced that while the J. Paul Getty Trust remains on probation, the Council will continue to engage in positive and constructive dialogue with the trust and is heartened by the trust's commitment to addressing issues of misconduct. "We are encouraged by steps that the Getty has taken to address these issues, and we wish to commend the board of the Getty for its willingness to address these problems quickly and directly," said Steve Gunderson, the Council's president and CEO. The decision in December 2005 by the Council to place the trust on a 60-day probation is part of the Council's Ethics Process when misconduct is charged against any member. NEWS COVERAGE

CORPORATE GIVER: Bank of America (BofA) plans to donate $200 million to nonprofits around the country this year, an increase of more than 50 percent from last year. The increase in giving is due largely to the bank's $48 billion acquisition of credit card issuer MBNA in January and will make BofA the largest corporate donor in the United States, according to a senior bank official. BUSINESS SUPPORT: The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation launched the Katrina Urban Entrepreneur Partnership to assist small and minority-owned businesses in the Gulf Coast destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. The foundation has committed up to $1 million to help ensure the businesses receive adequate clean-up and reconstruction aid and to position them for opportunities related to rebuilding Gulf Coast communities. ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE: The MetLife Foundation named three winners of its 20th annual Awards for Medical Research in Alzheimer's Disease. Karen Hsiao Ashe of the University of Minnesota Medical School and Minneapolis VA Center, received the award for her development of animal models for Alzheimer's disease. In addition, Frank LaFerla of the University of California, Irvine, and Christian Haass of Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich, Germany, were recognized as Promising Work winners for their research on the molecular development of the disease and amyloid plaques. The awards, which recognize scientists whose research has made significant contributions to the understanding of the disease, came with a total prize of $500,000 to the winners to further their research. NONPROFIT ECONOMY: In 2003, there were 837,027 nonprofits in the United States (excluding foundations and religious congregations)—an increase of 68 percent from 1993, according to United States Nonprofit Sector, a new report from the National Council of Nonprofit Associations (NCNA). The report also found that total assets of all reporting nonprofits were $1.76 trillion in 2003, and cites information from The World Factbook indicating the sector's asset base would make the "nonprofit economy" the sixth largest in the world, ahead of the economies of Brazil, Russia, Canada, Mexico and South Korea. HIV/AIDS RESPONSE: Program officers at The Otto Bremer Foundation and The Jay and Rose Phillips Foundation published A Growing Crisis: A Funders Response to HIV/AIDS in the African Community in Minnesota. The report is based on the work of a community convening and taskforce established by the foundations after program officers realized their lack of experience in funding for HIV/AIDS prevention and African cultures. The report recommends four categories of support: program, capacity building, education and prevention, and advocacy/public policy impact. LEADERSHIP GUIDE: The Community Leadership Handbook: Framing Ideas, Building Relationships, and Mobilizing Resources, by James F. Krile, interim director of leadership at Blandin Foundation, is based on the 20 years the foundation has been training community members in leadership skills. The handbook says the three core competencies needed for community leadership-the ability to frame ideas, to build social capital and to mobilize resources-must interact with each other to achieve results. ARTS PARTNERSHIPS: The Dana Press, a division of The Dana Foundation, released Partnering Arts Education: A Working Model from ArtsConnection, a publication on the importance of classroom teachers and artists forming partnerships as they build successful residencies in schools. The publication, which has seven chapters and a teacher's guide, provides insight and concrete steps using the ArtsConnection model. HURRICANE RESPONSE: Foundations and corporations have so far provided 17 percent of total funding for Gulf Coast hurricane response and individuals have provided 83 percent, says a new Foundation Center report. According to Snapshot of Philanthropy's Response to the Gulf Coast Hurricanes, $490 million was provided for relief and recovery efforts in the first few months after hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The report provides more specifics about the top givers, including the "top ten" states. In August 2006, the Foundation Center will release a more extensive report assessing the overall foundation response to the Gulf Coast hurricanes that will detail actual foundation and corporate contributions.
