NEWS COVERAGE

RELIEF RECORD: Charitable giving for victims of Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma totals more than $2.96 billion, setting what is believed to be a record for U.S. private philanthropic giving for a single disaster relief and recovery effort, according to the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. That total compares to just over $2.8 billion given in response to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, according to Foundation Center data. Although there is concern over whether giving for this year's natural disasters and donor fatigue may decrease contributions to nonprofits not providing disaster relief, research conducted by the Center on Philanthropy and other organizations after September 11 indicates that although some nonprofits may experience short-term downturns in donations, most organizations should not feel long-term effects. NURSING ISSUES: The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Northwest Health Foundation (NWHF) launched Partners Investing in Nursing's Future, a five-year, $10-million program that will support partnerships led by local foundations to address the nursing issues they've identified as most pressing in their communities. "We know that one size does not fit all, and we know that the challenges that face nursing today are vast and multi-faceted," said Judith Woodruff, NWHF's director of strategic initiatives and project director for the new program. Two-year grants of up to $250,000 will be awarded in August 2006 to support up to 10 projects. Brief proposals are due by February 16, 2006. Read more: http://www.partnersinnursing.org .

PANDEMIC PLANNING: The Pew Charitable Trusts announced the $1.5 million Pandemic Preparedness Initiative to assess the government's response to the threat of an avian flu pandemic and evaluate how well federal and state plans are being implemented for widespread public health threats. The Trust for America's Health will oversee the project, which will also bring together experts to educate and engage business leaders, the media and the public in effective pandemic planning exercises. JUST PUBLISHED

NATURAL DISASTERS: The Global Fund for Women released a report showing how women are disproportionately at risk during and after natural disasters. According to Caught in the Storm: The Impact of Natural Disasters on Women, estimates reveal that approximately three times as many women as men died in last year's tsunami. Data from Pakistan also indicate that more women than men were killed in the October 2005 earthquake. The report includes recommendations for relief groups, nongovernmental organizations and government agencies to implement before, during and after crises. ILLINOIS GIVING: A new report on Illinois foundation, corporate and individual giving trends from the Donors Forum of Chicago found that charitable giving in Illinois totaled $9.1 billion in 2003, up 2 percent from 2001. According to Giving in Illinois 2005, foundation and corporate giving dropped for the first time in six years, though. The study also found that assets of Illinois foundations rose by 6 percent during 2003, which Donors Forum President and CEO Valerie S. Lies says is "a good sign that foundations will be in position to increase grantmaking in the future." YOUNG PROFESSIONALS: The Jewish Funders Network (JFN) is accepting nominations for its biennial J.J. Greenberg Memorial Award. The award was established in 2002 by the network to honor foundation professionals age 40 and under who have demonstrated extraordinary leadership in the field of Jewish philanthropy. Award recipients will receive an item of Judaica and a cash prize of $5,000 to be used for professional development or tzedekah (charity). The award announcement and presentation will be made at the 2006 JFN International Conference, April 2–4, 2006, in Denver. Nominations must be received by January 30, 2006. Make a nomination or find out more: http://www.jfunders.org/special_events/special_events.htm?category_id=326 .

OLDER INNOVATORS: Civic Ventures, a nonprofit think tank, opened nominations for the Purpose Prize—five $100,000 investments in American social innovators over the age of 60. The program will also honor 60 semifinalists ("60 at 60+") for their social innovations. Purpose Prize winners will be effective and action-oriented innovators who have launched their work after their 50th birthday. To be eligible for the prize, the nominee must be at least 60 years old, a U.S. resident and currently working in a leadership capacity in an organization (public, private, nonprofit or for-profit) to address a major social problem. The five winners will be announced in June at the national Experience Leadership Summit. In addition to the $100,000 cash prize, winners will receive substantive assistance in developing their personal and organizational capacity to move their work to the next level. The award is part of Civic Ventures' Lead with Experience Campaign, a three-year, $9 million initiative to invest in older social innovators, funded by The Atlantic Philanthropies and the John Templeton Foundation. Nominations are due by February 28, 2006. Make a nomination or find out more: http://www.civicventures.org/prize.cfm .

AWARD PILOT: Starting in 2007, nonprofits (including charities, foundations, government agencies and trade and professional organizations) will be eligible to apply for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. The award is presented annually by the President of the United States to businesses and other organizations that demonstrate exceptional performance and management. In 2006, the National Institute of Standards and Technology will launch a pilot program for the new category to determine if the award's processes, procedures and criteria apply to the nonprofit sector. Although pilot participants will not be eligible for the award, they will (like applicants for the established award cycle) receive reviews by members of the Board of Examiners, potential site visits and feedback on strengths and opportunities for improvement.
