AT THE COUNCIL

HURRICANE RESPONSE: As foundations and corporate giving programs across the United States respond to the crisis that continues to unfold in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, our thoughts are with the millions devastated in the region. In line with our effort following the tsunami relief in 2004 and 2005, the Council on Foundations has created resources to assist those interested in donating or in tracking the philanthropic response to the disaster. These include links to charities and community foundations nationwide accepting donations and lists of known foundation and corporate donors, the amount of their contributions or pledges, and the recipient of each grant. While many donations will help meet the immediate needs of these communities (water, food and shelter), a number of the funds also are being established to meet the long-term needs of the affected area. The Council has several resources on providing disaster relief, including Disaster Grantmaking: A Practical Guide for Foundations and Corporations. For a list of all resources, including Council members who are providing relief to victims, visit http://www.cof.org/Content/General/Display.cfm?contentID=2918&orglink=76 .

The Southeastern Council of Foundations, one of the Council's regional associations, provided a report from the field that details some of the local relief efforts under way, as well as firsthand accounts from people on the ground. FREE NEWS SERVICE: Breaking News is a free, daily e-mail newsletter summarizing the top articles—mostly from national and regional newspapers—about philanthropy. Breaking News is available to Council members only. Subscribe by e-mailing your name, title and foundation name to media@cof.org.

NEWS COVERAGE

MEXICO PHILANTHROPY: The Kresge Foundation gave a five-year, $5 million grant to the YMCA of the USA to advance the culture of philanthropy in Mexico by partnering with Mexican YMCAs. The goal of the Kresge Mexico Philanthropy Development Initiative is to increase the capacity of YMCAs in Mexico to raise private funds, and expand and sustain youth, family and community development services. The foundation is providing approximately $2 million initially to strengthen the capital and annual campaigns of the YMCA of Mexico City, the YMCA Leon and the Mexican Federation of YMCAs' Border Initiative. Kresge's initiative will also include sharing YMCA best practices in fundraising, staff and volunteer development; creating philanthropic strategic alliances; introducing new fundraising technology; and strengthening partnerships with YMCAs in the United States. The initiative is part of Kresge's longstanding goal of building philanthropic capacity to help organizations broaden and deepen their base of support from private contributions, volunteer involvement and fundraising efforts. The YMCA of the USA and the Mexican Federation of YMCAs will co-manage the grant and make their own financial and technical contributions valued at more than $1 million. LIFETIME AWARDS: Anna Faith Jones and Claire L. Gaudiani are the 2005 recipients of the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University's Henry A. Rosso Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Ethical Fundraising. The medal recognizes lifelong dedication to emphasizing philanthropy's ethics and values, acting as a mentor to perpetuate and invigorate philanthropic traditions, and showing noted leadership in a long, productive career of distinction. Before becoming a professor at the George H. Heyman, Jr. Center for Philanthropy and Fundraising at New York University's School of Continuing and Professional Studies, Gaudiani served for 13 years as president of Connecticut College, which quintupled its endowment under her leadership. She is also author of The Greater Good: How Philanthropy Drives the American Economy and Can Save Capitalism. Jones is the former head of the Boston Foundation, where she developed innovative programs in Boston to fight poverty and support the arts. She is also former chair of the Council on Foundations, an Association of Black Foundation Executives' honoree, and recipient of the Council on Foundations' Distinguished Grantmaker Award. Jones currently serves as a director of the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, the National Civic League and Public Radio International. The medal presentation ceremony was held in conjunction with the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University's 18th annual symposium, Women and Philanthropy: Gaining Momentum, August 25–26, 2005. JUST PUBLISHED

PUBLIC HOSPITALS: A new study from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation found that urban public hospitals provided less in-patient and emergency care in 2002 than in 1996, and that more public hospitals closed during that time period than did for-profit and nonprofit hospitals. The study, Hospital Care in the 100 Largest Cities and Their Suburbs, 1996-2002: Implications for the Future of the Hospital Safety Net in Metropolitan America, was conducted by the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center. It also found that high-poverty suburbs, particularly in the South, appear to be relatively underserved by hospitals, compared to low-poverty suburbs, which appear to have an abundance of hospital resources. "Public hospitals may become an endangered species," says the study's lead author, Dennis Andrulis. "Not only are public hospitals disappearing from inner cities across the country, they are disappearing from the suburbs, as well."
