VENTURE GRANTS: The Student Social Venture Fund at New York University's Stern School of Business announced its inaugural grants to three New York City-based organizations working on the educational needs of underserved youth. The venture fund—the first launched at a business school in the United States—awarded grants totaling $100,000 to Sponsors for Educational Opportunity, the Lower Eastside Girls Club of New York and Legal Outreach. The awardees will also receive technical assistance from the fund's graduate students and access to other university resources. The fund's capital is provided by the Blue Ridge Foundation and Stern School alumnus Stewart Satter. Read more: http://w4.stern.nyu.edu/news/news.cfm?doc_id=4499 .

JUST PUBLISHED

SOCIAL JUSTICE: Produced by the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy, Social Justice Philanthropy: The Latest Trend or a Lasting Lens for Grantmaking? discusses social justice philanthropy and assesses its future. The report's definition of social justice philanthropy emphasizes promoting economic empowerment and making structural changes to rectify social injustices. It also recommends that foundations create a consensus on what social justice grantmaking should look like and articulate core social justice values to guide grantmaking to better address social ills. AT THE COUNCIL

CFSOURCE: The May CFSource provides an update on recent legislative activities, such as the April hearing on the nonprofit sector and IRS charitable rollover legislation. It also highlights 2005 Fall Conference activities, including the release of a survey on relationships among community foundations and United Way chapters and a speech from Tom Stewart, editor of Harvard Business Review. The issue also announces two new marketing resources—television commercials created to build community foundation awareness in Oklahoma City and an online catalog showcasing the California Community Foundation's commitment to visual arts and artists. Read the issue: http://www.cof.org/Content/General/Display.cfm?contentID=697 .

FREE NEWS SERVICE: Breaking News is a free, daily e-mail newsletter summarizing the top articles—mostly from national and regional newspapers—about philanthropy. Breaking News is available to Council members only. Subscribe by e-mailing your name, title and foundation name to media@cof.org.

NOW ONLINE

ASSESSMENT TOOL: A new online tool from BoardSource, Assessment of the Chief Executive, assists nonprofit boards with one of their primary responsibilities. Written by Joshua Mintz and Jane Pierson, the tool helps boards evaluate a chief executive's performance, provide honest feedback, set goals and document assessments. It can also guide nonprofits in determining appropriate compensation. Questions are based on best practices and standards for nonprofit chief executives. Anonymous responses enable board members to share information and opinions more openly. Purchase the tool (also available in print format): http://www.boardsource.org/ViewBookStoreItem.asp?ID=168 .

COMMUNITY INVESTING: The Community Investing Center aims to spur investment in the community investing field, because federal funding for community projects has declined. The center compiles information to help investment professionals learn about due diligence, incorporating community investing into different types of portfolios, risk/return issues and other fundamental considerations. The site also provides a searchable, comprehensive database of community investment institutions and products, including program, social impact and financial performance information. The center's sponsors, Social Investment Forum Foundation and Co-op America, are encouraging investors to direct assets to community investing through the 1% or More in Community Campaign.
