Borel, Sue Bernetich and Cathy Emerson (Delaware) NEWS COVERAGE SKOLL SUPPORT: The Skoll Foundation announced 13 winners of the 2005 Skoll Awards for Social Entrepreneurship: Appropriate Technologies for Enterprise Creation (ApproTEC), San Francisco; Barefoot College (Social Work and Research Centre), Rajasthan, India; CAMFED, Cambridge, England; Citizen Schools, Boston; Committee for Democracy in Information Technology, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; EcoLogic Finance, Boston; Fundación Paraguaya, Asunción, Paraguay; Institute for OneWorld Health, San Francisco; International Development Enterprises (India), Delhi; Rugmark Foundation USA, Washington, DC; Sonidos de La Tierra, Asunción, Paraguay; TransFair USA, Oakland, California; and Witness, Brooklyn, New York. The foundation also is renewing its support of the Bayview Hunters Point Center for Arts and Technology (BAYCAT) in San Francisco. The $7.3 million in grants, which supports entrepreneurs whose innovative programs address social problems, will be presented at the Skoll World Forum on Social Entrepreneurship in Oxford, England, on March 31. Through the Skoll Social Sector Program, the foundation will also give eight organizations $1.8 million to build the sector's infrastructure and effectiveness: Action Without Borders, New York City; Aspen Institute, Washington, DC; Civic Ventures, San Francisco; Community Foundations of America, Louisville, Kentucky; Give2Asia, San Francisco; Independent Sector, Washington, DC; Philanthropic Research, Inc., Williamsburg, Virginia; and Share Our Strength, Washington, DC. AT THE COUNCIL FIELD MEETING: The Panel on the Nonprofit Sector will hold a field meeting at the Council on Foundations 56th Annual Conference in San Diego, April 10, 2005, at 4 pm. The panel's March 1 interim report to the Senate Finance Committee recommended ways to improve nonprofit governance and accountability. The panel is now holding 12 meetings across the country to allow the nonprofit community to comment on and augment those recommendations before it submits its final report later this spring. The meeting is open to all, but registration is required for those attendees who are not registered for the conference. JUST PUBLISHED AFRICAN-AMERICAN WEALTH: Wealth Transfer Estimates Among African American Households, a new study from the Boston College Center on Wealth and Philanthropy, shows that between $1.1 trillion to $3.4 trillion could be transferred from bequests between 2001 and 2055. The report sheds light on patterns and trends in African-American household income, wealth and philanthropic giving, and suggests that charitable bequests could account for between $40 and $283 billion of that transferred wealth. The report, which also provides three strategies for increasing giving, was funded by the Twenty-First Century Foundation. CANADIAN SECTOR: According to The Canadian Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector in Comparative Perspectivethe first such studyCanada's nonprofit sector is vibrant and larger as a proportion of the entire economy than its counterpart in the United States. However, in raw numbers, the U.S. nonprofit sector is the largest in the world, while Canada's is the second-largest. The study, from Imagine Canada (formerly the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy) and the Johns Hopkins Comparative Nonprofit Sector Project, is part of an effort to analyze the nonprofit sector in a cross-section of countries worldwide.
