Purnell and Jeanne Sakamoto (Irvine); Jan Kreamer and Laura McKnight (Greater Kansas City); Elina Urli and Vanessa Jones (Council on Foundations) NEWS COVERAGE BRADLEY PRIZES: The Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation announced the winners of the 2005 Bradley Prizes, which recognize conservative scholars and thinkers who demonstrate "outstanding achievement consistent with the foundation's mission." The winners are Princeton law professor and Catholic scholar Robert George; Manhattan Institute legal scholar Heather MacDonald; American Civil Rights Institute founder Ward Connerly; and syndicated columnist George Will. PRODDING SCHOOLS: The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has given nearly $100 million to create dozens of small schools in New York City and is now urging officials to come up with a comprehensive plan to help larger schools, according to the New York Times. The Bloomberg administration has poured resources into opening small schools, but faces growing criticism for neglecting and overcrowding larger schools, which serve more than 90 percent of the city's high school students. Gates foundation officials said the ultimate goal of raising graduation rates and sending more children to college won't be achieved unless problems in the larger schools are fixed. JUST PUBLISHED HISPANIC GIVING: Silicon Valley Hispanics are unlikely to call themselves volunteers, donors or philanthropists, but they are among the region's most generous residents. Those findings come from Familia, Fé y ComunidadGiving and Volunteering among Silicon Valley Hispanics, a report released by Community Foundation Silicon Valley and the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley. "The biggest difference is that Hispanic philanthropy is very personal and informal. It focuses on an extended personal network we call la familia-family, friends, neighbors, and the local community," says Teresa Alvarado, board president of the Hispanic Foundation. INNOVATION AWARD: Amazon.com is conducting a nationwide search for the first Amazon.com Nonprofit Innovation Award, which will honor one U.S. nonprofit whose approach to philanthropy has achieved maximum impact. Stanford Business School's Center for Social Innovation will review applications and select the semi-finalists, then choose the finalists with a panel of celebrities, Fortune 500 executives and philanthropists. The competition will culminate in October 2005 with Amazon.com customers selecting the winner, who will also receive a matching grant from Amazon.com. Application deadline is April 28, 2005.
