NEWS COVERAGE

TSUNAMI RESOURCES: Need help responding to the earthquake and tsunamis in South Asia? The New York Regional Association of Grantmakers (NYRAG) Grantmakers Tsunami Resource Clearinghouse includes potential grantees vetted by Interaction; resource organizations; steps that grantmakers can take to assess and implement their own responses; contact information on members with personnel on the ground in a number of the affected coutries; and an interview with Florence Davis, president of The Starr Foundation, on the lessons learned from past disaster relief efforts. View the resources: http://www.nyrag.org .

According to Disaster Grantmaking: A Practical Guide for Foundations and Corporations, grantmakers have a distinct role to play when disasters occur because of their ongoing relationships with grantees, long-term perspective, flexibility and ability to quickly convene partners. Download the guide (PDF): http://www.cof.org/files/Documents/International_Programs/disasterguide.pdf .

The Spring 2003 Family Matters explored how foundations respond to war, terrorism and natural disasters, as well as IRS rules regarding assisting victims of disasters. Read the issue (PDF): http://www.cof.org/files/Documents/Newsletters/FamilyMatters/Spring_2003FM.pdf .

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS: Cisco Systems marked its 20th anniversary by giving the equivalent of 20 years of volunteer service to communities around the world. To recognize the company's culture of giving back, Cisco President and CEO John Chambers challenged its 35,000 global employees last May to volunteer one day in their communities. Employees have exceeded the goal of donating 175,200 hours (20 calendar years). Read more: http://newsroom.cisco.com/dlls/2004/corp_121004.html .

GIVING INDEX: Although most fundraisers remain hopeful about the charitable giving climate, human services organizations are less optimistic, according to the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University's Philanthropic Giving Index (PGI). The PGI surveys development executives and fundraising consultants representing a cross-section of nonprofits nationwide and charts their responses on a scale of one to 100. The overall December PGI—similar to an index of consumer confidence—was 89.7, down about 1 percent from the summer 2004 PGI. The human services organizations' PGI is 77.6, 12.1 points lower than the overall December PGI, the greatest recorded difference between the two indexes.
