Wellington (Independent Sector); Terry Beggy (Pittsburgh Social Venture Partners) NEWS COVERAGE INTERNATIONAL GIVING: Funding by U.S. foundations for international programs reached $3 billion for the fourth consecutive year in 2003, despite the economic downturn, terrorist attacks and the launch of an ongoing war. That's one key finding from International Grantmaking III: An Update on U.S. Foundation Trends, a study published by the Foundation Center, with the support and collaboration of the Council on Foundations. Also, health funding received the fastest growth and largest share of international support; and Asia replaced Western Europe as top recipient of overseas funding. Although most survey respondents expected their giving to remain steady or increase in 2004, nearly eight out of ten believed that international giving is more difficult due to a more demanding and uncertain regulatory environment. HELPING OLDER ADULTS: During the next 18 months, partnerships in 11 communities will work to improve long-term care and support systems to meet the needs of at-risk, older adults. The communities were selected by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Community Partnerships for Older Adults (CPOA). Communities receiving $150,000 development grants are Juneau, Alaska; Fremont, California; Jacksonville, Florida; Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; Oak Park, Illinois; Ann Arbor, Michigan; Manchester, New Hampshire; Waynesville, North Carolina; Charlottesville, Virginia; Culpeper, Virginia and Port Angeles, Washington. JUST PUBLISHED ANNUAL "GIVING": The New York Times published its annual "Giving" section today. Articles cover the trend of donors putting restrictive terms on gifts, donors who are slow to deliver on their pledges, private support of public schools, aid groups leaving Iraq, political advocacy groups' view of the past year's events, gifts of real estate and "give and get" transactions.
