(Grantmakers for Education) NEWS COVERAGE YOUTH IN ACTION: To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the New York Life Foundation announced $125,000 in grants to the winners of its new Youth in Action Award, who represent New York City's five boroughs. Winners are: Highbridge Community Life Center's Get and Give program (Bronx), Literacy, Inc.'s Teen Tutor Reading Partner program (Brooklyn), Reading Excellence and Discovery (READ) After-School, In-School and Summer Reading programs (Manhattan), Citizens for NYC's Young Citizens Center (Queens) and United Activities Unlimited's Young, Talented and Gifted Teens program (Staten Island). The winning organizations offer programs that support the foundation's Nurturing the Children initiative and reach nearly 1,400 children citywide. The panel, created in October at the encouragement of Senate Finance Committee members, will prepare recommendations for Congress on how to improve nonprofit oversight and governance. Advisory group co-conveners are Joel Fleishman and Marion Fremont-Smith. Other panel members are: Victoria B. Bjorklund, Evelyn Brody; William Josephson; Lester M. Salamon; C. JUST PUBLISHED ADAMSON INTERVIEW: In its November issue, Alliance Extra features an interview with Rebecca Adamson, president and founder of First Nations Development Institute.
