Carle (Kresge) NEWS COVERAGE LARGEST SCHOLARSHIPS: The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation named 39 recent college graduates as Jack Kent Cooke Scholars. The scholars receive an annual award of up to $50,000 each for the length of their graduate or professional degree programsthe largest offered by a private foundation in the United States. Recipients attended colleges in 20 states and the District of Columbia and are natives of ten countries, from Albania to Zimbabwe. CORPORATE GIVING: At the University of Colorado at Boulder Leeds School of Business, researcher Donald Lichtenstein confirmed that customers who view a corporation as socially responsible reward the company by buying more. He also found that customers' positive feelings about the company can extend to third parties, particularly nonprofits with whom the corporation has partnered. The original survey of 508 shoppers at four grocery stores in two Colorado cities was followed by three laboratory experiments. One surprising finding: Some consumers are more likely to donate to a corporate-supported nonprofit if the corporation's record of socially responsible behavior is weak, because they want to support a company that's changing its ways. MIND CONTROL: Four adults quickly learned to playand wina simple video game using only their thoughts to control the computer. They were involved in an experiment to demonstrate how using thought-controlled computer interfaces for tasks, such as moving artificial limbs, could give disabled people a measure of self-sufficiency. Daniel Moran, who received a 2002 Biomedical Engineering Research Grant from The Whitaker Foundation for similar studies of motor control in arm movements, collaborated with Dr. Eric Leuthardt on this study at Washington University in St. Louis. The Whitaker Foundation, which supports research and education in biomedical engineering, intends to spend out its assets in 2006. Read more: http://www.whitaker.org/news/moran.html . JUST PUBLISHED CFSOURCE: The July 2004 CFSource celebrates its one-year anniversary with the results of a reader survey. It also announces an update to the National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations, which now include a definition for "U.S. Community Foundation." A forthcoming resource, the Financial Institutions Marketing Portfolio, is also outlined. The portfolio includes materials that help community foundations turn potential competitors into development partners.
