Gardner Leadership Award at the IS annual conference in Chicago, November 79, 2004. The award honors Yzaguirre's lifelong work in reducing poverty and discrimination, and improving opportunities for Hispanic Americans. NEW FOUNDATION STANDARDS DEVELOPED: Responding to concerns about accountability, foundation staff and board members across the country have drafted standards and stewardship principles for family, community and large private foundations and corporate giving programs. "These foundations are defining and championing the highest standards and practices," said Dorothy S. Ridings, president and CEO of the Council on Foundations. "Like most grantmakers, they are committed to reaffirming the honesty and integrity that are a hallmark of the non-profit sector." The efforts range from clarifying legal requirements, to establishing operational norms, to setting a gold standard for the governance of grantmaking organizations. AT THE COUNCIL DOING IT RIGHT: The Council on Foundations is spearheading a new initiative to encourage and enforce foundations' standards of ethics and accountability. "Building Strong and Ethical Foundations: Doing It Right" is a two-year, grant-funded program to increase understanding of legal practices in foundations. The Council is forming partnerships with state and federal regulators to call a halt to bad practices through legal means while educating regulators, the public and the media about the appropriate roles and functions of foundations. Dorothy S. Ridings, president and CEO of the Council, said, "Most grantmakers are 'doing it right,' but there is a hunger in our growing field for an articulation of the very highest governance standards-and a mechanism to enforce them." Speakers include Marilyn Laurie, president of Laurie Consulting, Inc., formerly the highest-ranking woman in the history of AT&T. PARTICIPATORY RESEARCH DIRECTORY: The Northwest Health Foundation and Community-Campus Partnerships for Health are collaborating on a directory of U.S. funding sources for community-based participatory research (CBPR). The first edition will be distributed as a handout at the foundation's CBPR conference in Portland, Oregon, June 2830, 2004, and will subsequently be made available online in a searchable database. Funders can help make the directory complete by sending information about funding sources, active or forthcoming requests for proposals and program announcements that have supported or could support any aspect of CBPR (e.g., planning, specific projects, core infrastructure, training or conferences). MALINGER, as vice chair; ALENE VALKANAS, as secretary; and CAROL CRENSHAW, as treasurer. New board members are RIC ESTRADA, SANDRA GUTHMAN, RICHARD JONES and JEANNE KRACHER.
