Strait, Jr. (American Legacy); Allison Fine and Patrick Corvington (Innonet) NEWS COVERAGE ARTS FUNDING, PART I: June is Funding for Arts month at the Foundation Center, so they are hosting arts-related workshops at each center location, publishing a special issue of Philanthropy News Digest and launching PubHub, an online repository of arts-related reports funded or issued by grantmakers. Also, individual artists can get a free one-week subscription to Foundation Grants to Individuals Online during June. ARTS FUNDING, PART II: The Maricopa Regional Arts and Culture Task Force completed a report on the business impact of culture, "Vibrant Culture - Thriving Economy," which includes a set of strategies to advance arts and culture in Arizona's Valley of the Sun. The Flinn Foundation, The Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust, the J.W. Kieckhefer Foundation and the Margaret T. Morris Foundation combined resources to fund the work of the task force and the regional analysis, part of a multiyear effort by the foundations to strengthen the arts and culture infrastructure in the region. ARTS FUNDING, PART III: With the completion of its 2003 grants cycle, the Henry Luce Foundation passed the $100 million threshold in funding for the study and presentation of American art. Since the inception of the American Art Program in 1982, the foundation has supported approximately 200 exhibitions, more than 250 dissertation fellowships, more than 100 projects to catalogue museums' permanent collections and the establishment of four publicly accessible study centers. NOW ONLINE ASSESSING IMPACT: GrantBenefit, a new web resource from Community Foundations of Canada, can help foundations and other funders measure and demonstrate the impact of their grantmaking. Developed in consultation with community foundations, Philanthropic Foundations of Canada, The Muttart Foundation, the Ontario Trillium Foundation and other funders, the site provides grantmakers with a framework for assessing whether grants are making a difference; approaches for determining whether their foundations are making good grants; and more than 40 practical tools to use in reviewing their organizations' activities and community benefits. JUST PUBLISHED MINORITY REPORTING: According to a study released today by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and America's Health Insurance Plans, half of responding health insurance companies now collect data on the race and ethnicity of their members. This data is essential to addressing the gaps in care minorities often experience in the United States. Since 68 percent of health insurance plans collecting data report initiating their programs in 1998 or later (with 35 percent beginning data collection as recently as 2002 or 2003), the results of the study point to substantial progress in this area. AT THE COUNCIL COMMUNITY FOUNDATION INVESTMENTS: Preliminary tables on investment performance, asset allocation and multiyear and calendar year performance of 167 community foundations and 188 portfolios (21 foundations are in both corporate and trust form) are now online for Council members. The final report's executive summary, key tables and individual multiyear and calendar year performance will be released on the web the week of July 19. (Innonet) promoted ALLISON FINE, founder and former executive director, to president, and PATRICK CORVINGTON, director of consulting and training, to executive director.
