For the first time, the Corporation is also identifying and supporting social services organizations dealing with immigrants, families, youth, education and health, with grants equaling $5 million. The anonymous grants began in 2002, following the December 2001 centennial celebration of Andrew Carnegie's philanthropy. Read more: http://www.carnegie.org/sub/news/anon.html .

NONPROFIT EMPLOYMENT: Employment growth in the nonprofit sector has significantly outpaced that of the for-profit and government sectors, according to an Independent Sector study. Employment in the Nonprofit Sector found nonprofit employment grew at an annual rate of 2.5 percent between 1997 and 2001, adding more than 1 million jobs to the nation's economy. During the same time, employment grew at 1.8 percent annually in the business sector and at 1.6 percent in the government sector. In addition, nonprofit employment now encompasses 12.5 million workers—nearly 10 percent of total employment in the United States. The report predicts that by 2010, the number of nonprofit jobs will reach approximately 15 million.
