NEWS COVERAGE

CALIFORNIA'S PROPOSITION 54: News about California's October 7 special election has been dominated by the governor's recall. But Proposition 54, or the Classification by Race, Ethnicity, Color or National Origin (CRECNO) Initiative, is also on the ballot, and could have far-reaching consequences for grantmakers. The proposal would ban most attempts by state government to classify people by characteristics such as race and ethnicity. However, 84 percent of California foundations use such classifications in deciding distribution of grant dollars, according to the report "Flying Blind: Proposition 54 and Philanthropy" prepared by CompassPoint for The San Francisco Foundation.
